Menil

Research

Research and scholarship are central to the mission of the museum, and the Menil has a long history of initiating and supporting scholarly projects and publishing the results. Facilities in the museum, museum staff, and off-site research offices, and special project personnel create research hubs that result in exhibitions, publications, and programs of many varieties and scales. Some are represented here, and more will be developed and documented in the coming years.

Collections Research

Research on the permanent collection is ongoing. This work, which focuses on different areas of the collection, informs our regular rotations in the permanent collection galleries and special exhibitions. New texts on objects are added regularly to museum’s searchable online collection. More in-depth studies and features on specific works in the collection are available in the Read Online section or on the Menil’s YouTube channel.

Individuals may request a research appointment to study permanent collection artworks that are not currently on view in the galleries. Professors interested in teaching from the collection may also request an appointment. To do so, download and complete the appropriate form below and return by email to academicoutreach@menil.org at least three weeks in advance of your desired appointment date. All requests are subject to availability and approval.
